Climate Action in Bangkok

Posted on: July 15, 2009

Hey everyone — this is Jamie, East Asia coordinator for 350.org, writing from Bangkok.

Bangkok will be a center of climate action in the months ahead. This September 28, the United Nations will host one of the key “inter-sessional” meetings in the lead up to the Copenhagen meetings this December, when world leaders will decide on a new international climate treaty.

The Bangkok meetings will be a key international moment, and an important chance for our movement in Asia to make its voice heard loud and clear: we need climate solutions that meet the conditions science and justice demand.

Over the past two days, I’ve been meeting with some 350 partners who are leading the way here in Bangkok. The British Council is focused on training young “Climate Leaders” and will be hosting a number of initiatives in the months ahead. Greenpeace Southeast Asia is organizing an elephant parade this September – the word for elephant in Thai is “chang,” Greenpeace is adding an “e” to the end to make the elephants stand for “change!” The Global Campaign for Climate Action, a coalition of some of the largest international climate groups, will be officially launching its “TckTckTck” campaign here in Bangkok on August 29. I’ll also be meeting with the Thai Sustainable Development Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, and the United Nations Environment Program. And of course, we’ll all be working together on the 24 October day of action!

Okay, time to send some more emails out and prepare for another member of our team, Chern Chung, who is arriving from Malaysia at any minute now. Lot’s of work to do and exciting to see the momentum building.
